This quote means don't always depend on someone they will not be there for you forever. You have to check who's helping you in life and who's trying to make you do bad in life. This mainly states that you shouldn't follow on other peoples steps follow your own steps. An example to do good could be if they tell you to rob something from a lady and you declare that you won't do that because that's wrong. It's also even better if you don't mess around with people that choose the wrong. Why try to fit in be cool and do drugs when you could be yourself and make yourself proud instead of others.Another example is if they tell you "let's go smoke" if you say "no thanks" your doing the right thing by not joining on there wrong option.
